Amazing and inspirational new offices have been created for West Dorset District Council (WDDC) and Composite Profiles were the specialist metal decking contractor chosen to help deliver the scheme in Dorchester.

CJCT Architects were commissioned to develop a scheme in the heart of the town that would provide office space for WDDC, together with a new central library and adult education centre, whilst supporting the local character of this historic county town. ‘A highly sustainable scheme’ was a key requirement for WDDC’s new offices, so the choice of structural steelwork to form the frame, with composite metal floor decking was a clear winner.

Engineers, BWB Consulting, specified ComFlor® 60 to each of the four floors. Composite Profiles was subsequently employed to provide specialist detailing advice together with buildability solutions, followed by product supply and installation.

Our challenge was to provide a workable installation solution, which was sympathetic to the historic town of Dorchester, whilst meeting the tight programme timetable required to enable the entire project to push forward.

With our Head Office being less than 25 miles away from the site, our team members were well aware of the access issues and local restrictions often faced in this historic county town.

As is standard on Composite Profiles projects, early engagement with key stakeholders, especially the site management, was vital to establish a strong working relationship and to determine precise requirements and expectations for the project.

Our commercial team identified certain delivery restrictions as being a likely obstacle. Whilst composite metal decking deliveries will often have more than 1,000m2 on a single load, we had the foresight and local knowledge to price for rigid vehicles to avoid delivery challenges.

The ComFlor® 60 decking was bespoke made for the project, eliminating the need to cut on site, reducing noise pollution and aiding a speedy site programme. This method, standard for all Composite Profiles projects, also reduces site waste, adding to our commitment to the environment and sustainability.

“A highly efficient and economical floor decking solution, ComFlor® 60 provides excellent spanning capabilities and slab fire performance.  As the steel is UK produced and UK manufactured, ComFlor® is the only brand offering BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing, often essential for BREEAM rated projects. Our dedication to detail at the early stages saved both time and money on site. It was a real win-win for all concerned.”
