Building Excellence by Building an ‘All-Star Team’ in Dorset Woodland

During the week when the world joins together to raise awareness about Mental Health, it’s appropriately timed that Composite Profiles (an Investors in People Gold company) head out into the fresh air for a day of team building in Dorset woodland.

Under the expert tuition of local adventure organisers Land & Wave, the Composite Profiles’ team experienced a great fix of ‘back-to-nature’ with axe throwing, archery and fire making. All topped off with some fabulously healthy catering in the woods by Swanage-based Crab Apple Catering.

Mark Norton, Managing Director of Composite Profiles, discusses how his vision for an ‘all-star team’ starts with striving to be an excellent employer.

“Our annual Building Excellence day always includes a fun, secret activity that is loosely themed on the business strategy for the year ahead. This year was about working together to create an ‘all-star team’ rather than a team made up of ‘all-star individuals’. It’s too easy to end up working in team silos in an office environment, and mixing up the teams helps us recognise different talents in people that don’t always have the opportunity to be seen in everyday office routines. It reminds everyone to value each other’s individual skills whilst working together towards the same goals.”

On a day when the world puts a spotlight on Mental Health, encouraging staff to get away from screens and spend time outdoors during the working week is surely a sign of progressive employers. Modern business owners need to adopt a genuinely caring culture and look after their most important assets, their people; especially, if they want to attract the best talent from the well-documented choosy Millennials.

A reflection of Composite Profiles’ 2020 Growth Strategy is their expansion into the neighbouring offices on New Fields Business Park in Poole. In part, it’s because they don’t want to lose their beer fridge, table football, break out areas and (yes!) ping pong table to accommodate more desks, but more importantly it keeps their open-plan, award-winning one-team culture intact, which is also reflected in their Investors in People Gold Accreditation.
