Poole-based Composite Profiles UK, wins national award for Best Company Culture at Business Excellence Forum & Awards, Liverpool 2018
Specialist metal decking contractor, Composite Profiles UK, wins prestigious award for Best Company Culture, proving not only are they living by their company value of #BuildingExcellence but are positively changing the culture of the UK construction industry.
Being able to recruit good people in an area of low unemployment is a genuine challenge that many business owners face in the Dorset economy. An even bigger challenge is being able to retain good people!
Local company, Composite Profiles UK, is bucking the trend and has managed to build a team of talented and loyal individuals, contributing to the company’s increasing success. Managing Director, Mark Norton, acknowledges that their impressive 320% revenue growth in the past 5 years is partly down to having a committed team who he can trust with the autonomy to build the business together. The combination of an autonomous and non-blame culture significantly contributes to their almost 0% turnover of staff. Recruitment is often through staff referrals and employees recommending the company’s unique and flexible culture to friends and industry colleagues.
Last month, and for the first time in Composite Profiles’ 25-year history, the company has been nationally recognised for their unique culture scooping the top award in the category for Best Company Culture at the UK Business Excellence Forum in Liverpool. The conference represents around 450 UK businesses across 16 industry sectors and is attended by 1000+ influential entrepreneurs and business leaders. It’s hosted by ActionCOACH, a global network of high-end Business Coaches leading and inspiring some of the most successful individuals in the world.
There were an impressive 480 award entries. Composite Profiles beat tough competition from other category finalists, which included an online training business, environmental commissioning services and an award-winning digital marketing agency, to claim the winner’s trophy.
Awarding Composite Profiles UK as the Overall Winner, the judges reasoned it was down to:
“Innovative and far reaching corporate social responsibility programme with activities involving all team members and benefitting local charities. And a company that values its team members and places its culture at front and centre of all it does.”
This is even more impressive from a company that operates in the construction sector, which is often criticised for having old fashioned approaches and let’s face it, an industry that doesn’t have the most riveting reputation!
Dorset based, James Akin-Smith, Business Coach to Mark Norton, Managing Director of Composite Profiles is often asked by his other clients, “How do they do it? I’d love to achieve a truly engaged team” or “I’d like to meet Mark and pick his brains”.
Mark Norton’s belief is simple,
“I strongly believe that if we create a supportive, caring and flexible working environment, a committed high performing team will follow. Goal setting and visualisation is important to our employee development too but not just business goals, each employee is encouraged to set personal goals too. I am interested in the health and wellbeing of the complete individual, not just the percentage of the person who comes into the office.”
Perhaps the naturalness of Mark’s response is at the heart of Composite Profiles’ recent award and growing business success. It’s a genuine company culture stemmed from the sum of many small gestures, such as the free fruit bowl, fitbits given to staff to encourage healthy living, a ping pong table for staff to burn off frustration, regular work hours with encouragement to take lunch breaks and leave on time at the end of the day; rather than a culture shoehorned out of a policy of offering big corporate benefits where you’re worked to the bone before you can benefit from them.
James Akin-Smith adds,
“Employee engagement is a huge challenge businesses have to overcome. I work with a wide range of successful businesses, but Composite Profiles is quite exceptional. Every member of the team is truly 100% committed to the Vision, Mission and Culture of the organisation, put simply they all have a deep-rooted drive to become the very best. This commitment is built on their trust, confidence and belief in the leadership of MD Mark Norton, who clearly cares about every individual in his business.”
To add to the recent accolade of Best Company Culture, Composite Profiles is also one of only 3% of UK companies to have achieved a prestigious Investors in People Gold award, which is extremely rare with only 750 UK companies having achieved it and only a handful within the construction industry.
From their humble beginnings in Broadstone 25 years ago to their current 2000ft2 offices in New Fields Business Park, Poole, Composite Profiles UK really is proving it is following its strategy to lead by example and to become one of the most trusted metal decking and roofing subcontractors in industry.
This award-winning business is setting a great example locally about the benefits of a healthy, positive working environment. After all, that’s what living by the sea should be about!
