This state-of-the-art project providing 54,000 sq ft of laboratory and office space for scientific research and development provided Composite Profiles with an opportunity to demonstrate the commercial benefits of utilising the ComFlor 225® structural floor system.

The project enabled the installation of 4,400m2 of ComFlor® lightweight steel decking. Three units were fitted out with ComFlor® 225 decking, with an additional hub of 600m2 completed with ComFlor® 60 which provides exceptional spanning capabilities and significantly reduced usage of concrete.

ComFlor® 225 deck is a cold formed profile that provides fully optimised composite and load carrying characteristics.  The engineered floor system uses asymmetric beams with the bottom flange wider than that at the top enables the weight to bear on the lower flange of the beam, results in a minimal overall floor depth.

Mark Norton, Managing Director of Composite Profiles, explained that the whole floor installation process went very smoothly.

"We fitted end diaphragm plates, to stop concrete and, using an electrically operated boom, we were able to install these relatively deep ComFlor® 225 decks in much the same way as we would normally fit shallow depth profiles like ComFlor® 60."

"The building was well designed for the deep deck that was used. It all went very well. The clean, open bays enabled us to install the decks in the most effective manner. The clean, tight connections enabled us to easily trim decking to suit. All in all, it was a textbook project."

Colworth Science Park is set in 100 acres of Bedfordshire parkland and has been established to provide a location for scientific excellence in commercial research and development. The Exchange provides a centre for meetings, seminars, training and all-day catering.
